D again

May 17, 2004, 9:26 PM

So I'm talking to D tonight and it's just bizaare. I've known her like 5 years and just tonight she was telling me about stuff as a kid, like at 5 years old she'd come home from kindergarten and there'd be no one home. She was constantly left alone. They had money for food yet all they had in the house was bug infested malt o meal and she'd be picking the bugs out so she could cook it to eat. Or that her drunken step father at age 15 was throwing her around and her mom just turned her head. Then told everyone that D had lied about the incident. Or he'd watch her sleeping while he sat there naked. It's just amazing what people endure and how they come out with common sense and know what's right and wrong. Mostly she was neglected. She said that she knows people go through worse. But that doesn't make it any better.

Serious neglect, especially from her mother. All this coming to surface because she's looking for a place to live and her family is very unwilling to help her in any way.

Her brother and sister are 10+ years older, D was not planned, and she did get left behind. Age 13 her parents divorced and she was acting out. Huh, wonder why. Both parents remarried soon after they divorced. Her mom said D was out of control and D asked her who was the parent and who was the child. If she was so out of control, why didn't mom get D help? D finally got her mom to admit that she chose her husband over D. Icky stuff. I'm writing all this because I'm still surprised D turned out decent. She loves her kids, has morals and all that shit. How do people do that?

Nature Vs. Nurture?
