Ok. So tonight I fed 2 flying squirrels. Who don't look a lot like squirrels to me. They're super soft. And they're cute as anything on the face of this earth. Cute cute.

3 Great Blue Herons came in yesterday. 1 had to be euthanized. Then one is doing ok. He has a broken finger basically. The other one swallowed fish and fish net and had rotting fish stuck in his gullet. The vet put him under to try and get all the crap out of his throat and he died on the operation table. They were cleaning up and checked his heart again. No heartbeat. They checked his breathing. No breathing. A half an hour later. Still no breathing or heart beat. He goes into the dead bucket.

Corrie is in there and puts a dead opus in there. She hears some settling and rustling in the dead bucket. She opens the dead bucket. The dead Great Blue Heron is not dead. He's staring at her.

She and another person get him out and into a cage area. She calls the vet and leaves a message saying that the heron is not dead and what does he want her to do. She answers the phone later.

"Paws wildlife."

"What do you mean he's not dead?"

And so, he's ALIVE. ***He'll live too. I watched them tube feed the dude and he's walking around just fine.

We watched a night hawk get tube fed. They have these little beaks and then watch out when they open wide. They have the biggest gape I have ever seen, TV or real life. These little buggers could swallow an entire salmon.

So we leave the area after watching all these tube feedings and an old timer volunteer is crying because she said she was so lucky to get to witness this stuff. I thought that was neat. So many of the old timers are so matter-of-fact and almost cocky. They lose that feeling of how cool it is to be doing what they're doing.

Like feeding baby squirrels. People say "Oh you'll get tired of that really soon." How? How could you get tired of that? How could you get tired of listening to their high pitched little squeaks?
